Background
On 13 February 2026, the Ministry of Environment, under the leadership of Under Secretary of State H.E. Have Viseth and in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and community partners, implemented a Mud Crab Release Program. This initiative is part of the CamAdapt project focused on restoring biodiversity and genetic resources within Cambodia’s coastal ecosystems.
Scope of Application
The program took place at the Mud Crab and Vinegar Crab Genetic Resource Conservation Area, located within the Dong Peng Multiple Use Area, Srea Ambil District, Koh Kong Province. This area is designated for conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources in mangrove ecosystems.
Key Provisions or Decisions
The activity involved the release of 300 kilograms of mud crabs into the conservation area. This restocking effort aims to replenish declining fisheries populations and support the recovery of genetic resources within the protected mangrove ecosystem.
Implications for Investors, Businesses, or Compliance
While primarily focused on environmental restoration, this initiative supports the sustainability of fisheries-dependent communities and contributes to climate resilience. It underscores the government’s commitment to ecological management, which may impact related sectors such as aquaculture, fisheries, and coastal resource management.
