Background
On 3 March 2026, the Ministry of Health officially announced the implementation of the National Strategy on Micronutrient Fortification in Food for the period 2025 to 2030. The launch event was held at the Sun & Moon Riverside Hotel in Phnom Penh under the presidency of H.E. Bin Trachay, Minister of Planning. Dr. Prak Sophannarith, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Health and Deputy Chair of the National Nutrition Council, represented the ministry at the ceremony.
Scope of Application
The strategy applies nationally, involving ministries, relevant institutions, development partners, international organizations, UN agencies, civil society organizations engaged in nutrition and health, and private sector stakeholders, including food producers and processors. It focuses on promoting micronutrient fortification in food products to improve nutritional outcomes and public health for the population, particularly women and children.
Key Provisions or Decisions
The strategy aims to disseminate knowledge and provide clear guidance on the content and direction of micronutrient fortification efforts in Cambodia. It seeks to encourage active engagement from all related government ministries, institutions, development partners, and the private sector to participate in enhancing nutrition through fortified foods. It also promotes multisectoral collaboration for the effective implementation of the strategy at national and subnational levels.
Implications for Investors, Businesses, or Compliance
Food producers and processors are identified as key stakeholders expected to participate in the fortification efforts, aligning their product development and processing with the strategy’s goals. Compliance with the national strategy is crucial for businesses involved in food production to contribute to public health improvements and may entail adjustments in manufacturing processes to include specified micronutrients.
