Background
On February 10-11, 2026, Mr. Tang Sophat, Deputy Director General of the Technical Affairs Department under the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM), led a work team to inspect, coordinate, and promote management activities for water storage reservoirs and hydraulic systems in Banteay Meanchey and Oddar Meanchey provinces. This mission was conducted on behalf of H.E. Thao Chetha, Minister of MOWRAM.
Scope of Application
The inspection focused on key reservoirs including the Trapang Thma reservoir in Phnum Srok district, Banteay Meanchey, and the Stueng Sraeng 1 and 2 reservoirs in Chong Kal district, Oddar Meanchey. These reservoirs serve daily water supply needs and provide irrigation for significant areas of wet and dry season rice cultivation.
Key Provisions or Decisions
The Trapang Thma reservoir has an approximate capacity of 180 million cubic meters, supplying water for daily use and irrigating 25,000 hectares of wet season rice and 15,000 hectares of dry season rice. Its infrastructure includes four main canals, twelve secondary canals, and 113 hydraulic structures of various sizes.
The Stueng Sraeng 1 and 2 reservoirs have a combined storage capacity of around 411 million cubic meters, supporting daily water use and irrigating approximately 50,000 hectares of wet season rice. Their infrastructure comprises two main canals, eighteen secondary canals, one spillway, 38 hydraulic structures, and 130 culvert bridges.
During the visit, the Deputy Director General consulted with provincial dam departments, local authorities, and community water user committees. Field inspections were carried out to assess prior activities and coordinate plans for ongoing management and improvements.
Implications for Investors, Businesses, or Compliance
The inspection and coordination efforts reinforce official oversight and sustainable management of major water infrastructure critical to agricultural productivity and water security in the provinces. The emphasis on infrastructure maintenance, water allocation, protection against illegal encroachment, and community involvement ensures stability and reliability for water-dependent economic activities.
