Background
The Mekong River Bridge construction project connects Dei Edth commune in Kien Svay district and Thma Kór commune in Lvea Em district, Kandal Province. It aims to facilitate transportation by spanning the Mekong River and linking important roadways including the Sihanoukville Corridor (City Ring Road 3) and the planned Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway.
Scope of Application
The project encompasses approximately 3.7 kilometers, including a main bridge over the Mekong River and connecting road bridges. It involves infrastructure development designed to accommodate vehicular and pedestrian traffic as well as navigation channels for boats.
Key Provisions or Decisions
As of February 2026, construction progress has reached 39.29%. The Minister of Public Works and Transport led a delegation to monitor the work, instructing the construction company to adhere strictly to the technical standards and safety requirements while maintaining environmental considerations. The company committed to enhancing cooperation with technical teams and accelerating construction progress, while also facilitating public transportation during the work.
The main bridge is 1,600 meters long and 26 meters wide, including lanes for motor vehicles, motorcycles, and pedestrians. It also incorporates three navigational channels each 110 meters wide and 15 meters in height clearance to ensure safe boat passage.
Implications for Investors, Businesses, or Compliance
The project’s timely and quality completion will improve connectivity between key traffic routes, facilitate regional trade and mobility, and support infrastructure investment confidence in Kandal Province and surrounding regions.
